To wear a traditional “charro” costume is not for anyone. A symbol of Mexico’s great history, this costume requires aplomb, gallantry and attitude. Dressing like a “charro” is identify with the noble and passionate people, who sing their joy and their pain.
Alejandro Fernández essence belongs to this description, artist through and through, he is a modern representative of a legion of “charros” singers; they are authentic ambassadors of the Mexican identity, in which figures like Pedro Infante, Jorge Negrete, Javier Solís and Vicente Fernández, have stood out. Alejandro Fernández (Mexico City, 24/04/1971), is the receiver of a rich artistic legacy which he has honored with his personal contribution, giving to the romantic Mexican song a development starting from the tradition, but harmonized with the modernity. The beginning of this story has been told many times. The story of the five years old little boy that is motivated to go up into the stage to sing with his father. During a tribute Vicente Fernandez received in San Antonio, Texas. The boy had practiced his part, he knew it very well, but the expectant look of thousands of people made him seized with panic and the confusion came. When the little boy started to cry, his father came to the rescue, repairing the verse, and helping him to continue. The incident reduced the interest of the little boy from becoming a singer like his father, and the father did not insist. So much so, that even Alejandro decided to study architecture. He was studying when Don Vicente (his father) came with a proposal of recording a duet with him for a record tribute for the Mexican music. Alejandro agreed and the song “Amor de los dos” turned out to be a hit. The success of the duet motivated a new invitation, but this time Alejandro Fernandez did it as a soloist. The proposal of recording his first album could not wait. In 1992 he launched his first homonym album that reported unusual sales for this kind of music. The audience was surprised by this new and fresh traditional Mexican music, which allowed him to summon a younger public for this gender that seemed to be forgotten. Alejandro realized that the possibilities to become an artist were big and left his architecture career for recording a second album named “Piel de Niña”. This album had a romantic style, produced by Pedro Ramirez. In 1994, he presented “Grandes éxitos a la manera de Alejarndro Fernandez”, showing off in a magnificent performance with pieces of big composers like Luis Demetrio, José Antonio Fernández and Armando Manzanero. His definitive entrance to the Mexican market turned out to be with the album “Que seas muy feliz”, where he included the song “Como quien pierde una estrella” that created a new audience between the young public for the romantic Mexican music and became the new hymn for the “ranchero” kind of music. The song changed Alejandro´s career drastically and broke record sales for ranchero music, and opened the door for other music territory by being included in pop music radio stations. He got the consolidation of his career with his next album “Muy dentro de mi Corazón” which came to prove that the “charro” image could still be profitable as long as you updated it. Meanwhile other artists are talking about the “crossover” singing from Spanish to English; Alejandro is one of the few singers who became a superstar making the transition from ranchero music to pop music. This duality began in 1997 with “Me estoy enamorando” , a collaboration with producer Emilio Estefan, this one sold over 3 million copies around the world, consolidating him as an international star. In “Mi verdad” recorded in 1998, Alejandro returned to the genre that opened the door to his success, the one which won the hearts of thousands of Mexicans, and the one that he is carrying in his blood since he was a child. This album made him winner of a Grammy Latino. That same year he participated in a marvelous Christmas concert recorded in December 1998 named “Christmas in Viena” with the participation of tenor Plácido Domingo, French singer Patricia Kaas whom together with Alejandro performed a beautiful variety of Christmas Carols with the participation of magnificent world famous composers.
