Bio

NO ES LO MISMO (It’s Not the Same) is the newest album from superstar composer performer Alejandro Sanz and his first recording of all new songs since 2000’s multi-Grammy winning El ALMA AL AIRE. In between, Alejandro Sanz became the first Spanish artist to record and release an album included in the renowned MTV Unplugged series. ALEJANDRO SANZ – MTV UNPLUGGED (2001), a live recording that revisited some of his most important and successful songs with the new track“Y sólo se me ocurre amarte”, won a record-setting three Latin Grammys and garnered critical raves from around the world.

NO ES LO MISMO, Sanz´s sixth studio recording, is an expression of the Madrid-based musician’s current creative state and reflects his continued growth as one of contemporary music’s greatest and most interesting songwriters.

NO ES LO MISMO marks Sanz´s debut as a producer of his own work working together with the Cuban musician/producer Lulo Perez. The album was recorded and mixed from February to June of this year at the legendary Criteria/The Hit Factory studios (Hotel California, Saturday Night Fever) and was engineered by Rafa Sardina (Babyface, Rod Stewart), mixed by Mick Guzauski (Eric Clapton, NSYNC, Celine Dion) and mastered by Bob Ludwig at Gateway Mastering studio in New York.

Sanz worked with some of the world’s best musicians on the new work: drummer Vinnie Colaiuta (Frank Zappa, Sting, Barbara Streisand) and Horacio “El Negro” Hernández specialised in Latin-jazz; bassist Anthony Jackson (Madonna, Steely Dan, George Benson); and guitarist Michael Landau (Michael Jackson, B.B. King, Chicago) . One of the most important moments on the album comes from legendary flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucia on “Regálame la silla donde te esperé” (“Give Me the Chair Where I Was Waiting for You”).

NO ES LO MISMO is a fusion of cultures, from Andalucía to La Habana, from México to Madrid. This mix of colors and sounds shapes a ground-breaking album for Sanz as he moves from a Cuban Son (on which he plays tres, a 3-stringed Latin instrument) to Hip Hop, to pop with a strong flamenco flavour. Sanz also touches poetically on political subjects, such as Cuba (“Labana”), and environmental issues (“Sandy a orilla do mundo”, Sandy at the Shoreline of the World). Through it all are Sanz’s unique vocals, sophisticated production and gift for nuanced songwriting.

NO ES LO MISMO is not just a title. It's an attitude, a fresh concept behind a new work from a constantly evolving artist. NO ES LO MISMO is Alejandro Sanz.
